Golf Topping The Ball
In golf topping the ball could be fairly frustrating and has to be stopped anyhow. Even though most golfing gurus agree on the diagnosis, each one has his or her treatment to stop topping golf ball.
There are those who believe that a topped shot is caused by a swing on a sheer inside-out plane where the sole of the club bounces off the grass much behind the ball – and this is what creates a dropkick.
Others however are of the opinion that ‘keeping the head down’ often causes a topped shot.
Yet another school of thought believes that this happens due to ‘looking up’ or raising the body up too early’.
But no matter what is causing the problem, what you need to do is stop this from happening. Here is a practical remedy for golf topping the ball, which if followed carefully will take care of the problem.

Techniques to Stop Topping The Ball:
- Place a golf ball on a penny or a nickel (5-cent coin) and then try to hit the nickel instead of the ball and practice hitting it from under the ball consistently till you reach perfection.
- If you find it difficult to practice with the ball resting on the nickel, remove the ball and just try hitting the nickel.
- Take a look at the ball’s location. If it is too far off from the stance, you could be hitting the ball on the upswing, thus topping the golf ball. There is another possibility and this is that, you are forcibly trying to lift the ball up into the air. Placing the ball at the dead center of the stance will greatly reduce the chances of topping.
- Check the wrist and see if it breaks prior to the impact which is a contributory factor for a topping shot. Keeping hands, arms as well as wrists well ahead of the ball during the swing will help you stop topping the golf ball.
- Also check the grip on the club. Employing consistent medium pressure on the grip will help a lot, especially during the swing. Some adjustments may become necessary to thwart the topping tendency. This will keep the body relaxed too, thus averting the topping effect. However, tension on the grip should be applied only during the set up.
- Checking of the posture can also help you. Flexing of the knee at the set up stage is vitally important. Do not try to remain upright when taking the swing.
- Swing correctly but never lift your body away from the ball, particularly when following through. Also ensure that the left arm does not curve during the impact. Keeping a soft swing is best to avert a topping shot.
Here’s one last tip to help you in golf from topping the ball: to avert chronic topping shots, it is always advisable to keep the right shoulder at a lower plane than the left shoulder when following through. Besides, it is good to consider the right shoulder as the one driving into the golf ball.
