How to grip golf club – Grip Variations

There are so many different grip variations out there that it may be overwhelming, however most of them you will probably be able to eliminate once you begin experimenting with them.

I will be giving you a basic guide on the variations of how to hold a golf club so that you can get started on the right track.

Overlapping Golf Grip (aka Vardon Grip)

Players who have larger hands tend to use the overlapping golf grip, where the right pinky finger is placed over the top and between the index and middle fingers for their left hand.  This grip is the most common grip among great players.

Interlocking Golf Grip

Players who have medium to small hands and fingers tend to use the interlocking grip, where the right pinky finger is on the grip but between the index and middle finger.

It’s kind of like hooking together your right pinky with your left index finger.  This grip is very popular on the LPGA tour and used by many well known golfers such as Tiger Woods.

This is one of the best grips to use if you are a beginner.

Baseball Golf Grip

Some players with small hands also use what they call the baseball grip, where you grip the club with all 10 fingers, similar to a baseball bat grip.  This grip is the least preferred, but can be used to teach beginners the basics.

How to hold a golf club – Golf Grip Tips

Now that you know how to hold a golf club and understand the different types of grip variations and grip positions out there, you can begin to experiment with the different grips and see which one feels the most comfortable to you.

If you are wondering how you can change your grip in response to undesirable ball flight here are some tips:

  • If the ball tends to curve right, then you want to move your hands into a stronger position; slowly move both hands to the right
  • If the ball tends to curve left, then you want to move your hands into a weaker position; slowly move both hands to the left
  • If the ball is going straight then you know that is the right grip for you!

Other Grip Tips

  • Make sure when you grip the club you do not grip it to tight, the more relaxed your grip the straighter and farther you will hit the ball
  • Be sure to practice with your new grip before you go to the golf course, this will give you some time to not only get used to it but also fix minor problems.  I suggest going and hitting a bucket of balls at the driving range.
  • Be sure to use the right clubs and grips for your physical stature.  If you are a woman use woman’s clubs and grips as men’s grips are made differently to better fit their hands and vice versa.  The size of the grip also affects the ball flight.  For example larger grips tend to make a person fade the ball and smaller grips tend to make a person draw the ball.
  • If you are a beginner I recommend buying grips that have lines on it to show you where to put your hands when gripping the club.
