Pitching Golf Tips
A common question concerning the short game is how to hit a pitch shot in golf. A pitch shot is similar to chipping only it gets the ball higher into the air, normally used in trouble shots or in between chipping and short wedge shots.
The following article will discuss pitching golf tips to help you understand and improve your pitching technique.
A pitch shot that gets the ball high into the air involves several issues that include the grip, swing, ball position as well as pitch alignment and posture. It also involves cocking of the wrists apart from the fact that the open face of the club aids more in the loft.
Most of us are not professional golfers and play the game just for fun or just for the love of it. And that is why, we end up making a mistake at something – the result – the golf pitch is not accurate.

Golf Pitching Tips – The Grip
As far as the grip is concerned, it is similar to the one that is used in the full swing. Do keep in mind that the hand placement on the grip needs to be closer to the club head because of the length of the shot (as with chipping).
In a pitch shot, cocking of the wrist is fairly important. So when you are doing this, remember to use both the arms and the shoulder, rocking back and from side to side.
In fact, there should be no other movement, except the wrist that makes the club parallel to the ground.
We have described the movements here for your convenience…
- Swivel the arms till the shaft gets aligned to the target line.
- To keep the club straight in front and parallel to the ground, cock the wrists well.
Do this when the toe of the club head points to the sky (which is often referred to as the “Toe up” position). In this position, the player’s front arm should be extended, while the back arm should remain close to the side and the only movement is that of the club going towards the ball – keep the wrists cocked up to the last moment.
As soon as the wrists release their grip, the club head would soft-touch the grass on which the ball is resting, which marks the real drill for golf pitching.
Golf Pitching Tips – Alignment
How do you set the alignment for a pitch shot? Let us now take a look at that. Set the hips, shoulders and feet fairly open to the target line in a way that they are positioned to the left of the target line.
However, an easier way for checking the appropriate posture would be to hold the club against the back (right hand holding the grip end near the head), while the left hand should hold the club head end near the lower back.
Golf Pitching Tips – Ball Position
Where do you need to position the ball when you are hitting a pitch shot? The most favored position is usually right in the middle of the stance.
Just keep the above mentioned pitching tips and practices in mind when learning how to hit a pitch shot in golf, and you will be on your way to pitching success.
