Proper Golf Grip

proper golf grip recommended resourceUnderstanding what the proper golf grip is and how to implement it into your golf game could end up being the difference in a good round of golf versus a bad one.

The grip has the most effect on the flight of the golf ball, so slightly adjusting your golf grip properly will help with undesirable ball flight.

However, keep in mind that when I am talking about the proper golf grip I don’t necessarily mean that there is only one way to grip the club in order to hit a good golf shot, there actually are many different ways you can grip a golf club and still be successful.

There are suggested tips as to which grip might work the best for you based on your physical features, however the grips are so similar that most people choose which ever grip feels the most comfortable to them.

I will first go over the basic grip then go into grip variations and tips.

Proper Golf Grip Instructions – Left Hand

*The following instructions for the proper golf grip are based on right handed golfers, if you happen to be left handed follow the same steps only reverse your hands.

1.)    If you have a golf glove you want to put it on now, most right handed golfers put a glove on their left hand,   however there are some people who put gloves on both hands; once again this is a comfort thing.

2.)    Set the golf club on the ground (head down) as if you were getting ready to hit the golf ball.

3.)    Place your left hand (palm up) towards the top part of the golf club grip, freely place the golf club across the left palm- from the base of the forefinger to the pad above the pinky.  Let go of the club with your right hand so that only your left hand is touching the grip.

4.)    Next, hold the club steady with your left fingers and wrap your palm around the top of the grip.  Make sure your thumb sits on top of the club and points straight down toward the club head.

Proper Golf Grip Instructions — Right Hand

Now that your left hand is in the right place, it’s time to put your right hand on the club.

5.)    Take your right hand and slowly bring it across your right leg and to the bottom of the golf grip.  Below your left hand, with your palm faced up.

6.)    Place the grip more towards the fingers of your right hand then the palm and simply fold the right hand around the fingers of the left, so that the right thumb covers the left hand thumb, and pointing slightly towards your right shoulder.

7.)    When you are done both the left and right palm should be facing each other. Also make sure that you are griping the club with your fingers more so then your palm, so that you do not have a weak swing.

This is the just the starting point of the proper golf grip, the hand placement primarily controls how your club face comes through when you hit the ball.

However, depending on your physical features and comfort level it may not be the best grip for you.

In the next section I will cover the different variations of the golf grip along with some basic grip tips to keep in mind when it comes to undesirable ball flight.
