Though the fat shot isn’t counted among the seven scariest golf shots that include…

(a) Pitch over a deep bunker;

(b) Approach over water;

(c) Dreaded half-wedge;

(d) First tee shot;

(e) Long bunker shot;

(f) Downhill four-footer and

(g) Next shot after a shank,

but it still has its own peculiarities.

Hitting fat shots nonetheless, is not a very uncommon event for beginners who try to blame their irons for hitting the ground instead of hitting the ball. So please do not despair if you end up doing this too often – there are many others who are doing this all the time.

Hitting fat shots has got very little to do with the clubs – the problem is mostly in shifting body weight and/or incorrect posture.

It has also got nothing to do with the swing. In most cases the club hits the grass behind the ball, a lot of dust appears and when it settles down, the ball is found sitting blasé on the ground! It can be quite embarrassing.

However, there are quite a few ways to curing them. All you need to do is keep them in mind to stop hitting fat golf shots.

Here is a easy step by step guide to stop hitting fat shots:

1.)  Start in your set-up position.

2.)  Take the backswing and keep it up at the top.

3.)  Move the hips horizontally towards the target and see how it affects the back shoulder to ‘dip’.

4.)  When the ‘dip’ is perfect, hit behind the ball.

5.)  The problem is solved and there will be no more fat shots.

6.)  To keep it up, do not indulge in lateral movement.

Keeping the lower body out of swing movement is the key to avoiding this problem.

Why don’t you begin your downswing with the arms instead?

It may be difficult to break any habit about the swing, if you have already got it, but once you have changed it, things will take their natural turn. The weight shift may still occur even if you keep the hips still, but it will take place in a more or less natural way.

Also important would be to keep the front shoulder ‘down’ on the golf ball which will let you maintain the swing on the right plane. Besides, it will also help the hands synchronize with your body.

However, make sure that the shoulder does not come up and go away from the target prior to the impact as otherwise your body will invariably go before the hands and this would naturally cause fat shots.
